The Orange County Government’s Public Works department is currently undertaking a pedestrian safety improvement project along South Rio Grande Avenue between Holden Avenue and Gore Street.
The project includes placing new midblock crossings with raised refuge islands for pedestrians and rectangular rapid flashing beacons. The outside travel lanes both north and southbound are also being repurposed to provide a new seven-foot bike lane with a four-foot buffer between the interstate and Gore Street.
A number of intersections along South Rio Grande Avenue are also being modified to better accommodate trucks while minimizing pedestrian crossing distances and slowing vehicle turning speeds. The sidewalks and curb ramps are also being updated to meet ADA requirements.
South Rio Grande Avenue will be resurfaced from 33rd Street to Gore Street with new pavement markings, with all work estimated to be complete by the end of October 2024.
