This week features a few usual suspects hosting events demonstrating why they remain in the conversation and the spotlight.
Thursday is the monthly Third Thursday event centered at CityArts (Website) located at 39 S. Magnolia Avenue. This event is not just a regular art show but a unique experience you wouldn’t want to miss. It starts at 6 PM and runs until 9 PM, giving you plenty of time to explore the diverse range of art on display. Get there by 4:30 PM and you can check out the street vendors. Artists and Makers will be set up on Magnolia, between Pine and Central. They continue in Heritage Park in front of the Orange County Regional History Center (Website).
Friday night, Snap! (Website), the premiere gallery in Orlando, will host Le Salon. The gallery will present its usual strong showing with several great artists, including Chris Robb, Theresa Lucey, Ericka Sobrack, and Nicholas Kalemba. The show runs from 7 PM to 10 PM and will be a vibrant social gathering, perfect for meeting fellow art lovers. SNAP! is at 420 E. Church Street.
There are a couple of very interesting events on Saturday. On Saturday evening at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts (Website), Cole NeSmith brings another highly anticipated art spectacle. His events are known for their ambition and never fail to deliver.
Wavelength (Website) is part musical performance and part sound and visual installation. Light, lasers, and immersive projection fuse with 20 professional singers, 12 orchestral musicians, and an ambient, modern rock band to create a unique, in-the-round experience. Wavelength is the brainchild of the creators: Creative Director Cole NeSmith, Director Aradhana Tiwari, Choral Music Director Chris Keough, Band Director Greg Perkins, and Composer & Conductor Julian Bond. The event is for one night only. The first show is at 5:30 PM, and the second is at 8 PM. Dr. Phillips is at 445 S Magnolia Ave.
At 9 PM, Vienna legend Johannes Grenzfurthner will be hosting a performance at The Nook on Robinson (Instagram) that has snuck under Orlando’s cultural radar for the past three years. What Johannes does I can reduce to an extremely interesting and hilarious PowerPoint presentation, but it may be more accurate to describe it as a stand-up comedian doing a TED Talk.
Grenzfurthner – who is the founder and artistic director of Monochrom (Website), an internationally renowned art, theory group, and film production company – told me Saturday’s presentation will be called “The Great Unifier.” In his words, it is “a little musical excursion into corporate culture and subversion.”
Sounds perfect for a grand night out. And it’s free.
