City Council recently approved the proposed purchase of six new swans for its ever-changing flock at Lake Eola.

Commissioner Patti Sheehan made the request for funds in the amount of $19,500, to purchase mated pairs of Australian black-necked, trumpeter, and whooper swans. The two Australian swans would replace the two that were (allegedly) killed by a random river otter and bird flu losses. Several cygnets, or baby swans, were also killed by a raccoon in recent months.

“People love our swans at Lake Eola Park, and I want to make sure we continue to have five of the seven varieties of swans.”

– PATTY SHEEHAN, COMMISSIONER, DISTRICT FOUR, CITY OF ORLANDO

The funds for the swans were taken from Commissioner Sheehan’s discretionary budget, with $7,500 for the whoopers, $7,500 for the trumpeters, and $4,500 for the black-necked swans.

There are an estimated 60 swans currently living in Lake Eola.
