Mead Botanical Garden will play host to a special tree-focused symposium of sorts on Thursday, October 17 from 5:15-7:30 p.m.

“Tree Time – Green Up” will feature a guided tour of 21 tree species that are seen as the most desirable for Florida yards, followed by an interactive panel discussion with local policy and botanical experts on ways to “green up” Winter Park.

Enjoy beverages by Rise Yaupon (Website) along with wine and lite bites as you learn about tree selection, planting, and care tips for residential landscapes, with examples taken from the 47-acre property at Mead Botanical Garden. Volunteers will guide participants on tours of the property to learn about the unique characteristics and needs of each tree.

The tours will be followed by a panel at the Azalea Lodge at 6:30 p.m., moderated by Dr. Leslie Poole, author and assistant professor of environmental studies at Rollins College. Panelists will include Winter Park mayor Sheila Deciccio; Josh Nye, Winter Park’s certified arborist and Urban Forestry Director; and Catherine Bowman, past state president of Florida Native Plant Society. The discussion will focus on the challenges facing urban areas to protect and expand their tree canopies and green spaces.
