“The safety of our city is our number one priority and we will not tolerate crime in our city and we will leverage every tool available to keep our city safe.”
– MAYOR DYER, CITY OF ORLANDO
The mayor’s office has issued a Local State of Emergency for the City of Orlando and our downtown businesses. Downtown bars will end liquor sales at midnight and there will be a curfew from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. specifically for the Downtown Entertainment Area.
The move was a reaction to a shooting that took place in downtown Orlando overnight during Halloween celebrations. Jaylen Edgar was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and six counts of first-degree murder with a firearm. Seven people were injured and two people were killed by the shooting, with one person being trampled as people fled. Those deaths mark the 18th and 19th homicide of 2024, according to Police Chief Eric Smith, who also shared at a press conference this afternoon that he would be increasing the police detail in downtown this coming weekend.
The Mayor’s State of Emergency can legally last for seven days.
The City of Orlando is looking at launching single-point security access to downtown bars, according to Commissioner Shan Rose, District 5, who spoke with News 6 in a recent interview.
