On December 29, 1824, Mosquito County was established, covering the majority of Central and Eastern Florida, including modern-day Brevard, Indian River, Lake, Marion, Martin, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Polk, St. Lucie, and Seminole Counties.
The county seat of Mosquito County was in New Smyrna, but later moved to Enterprise. The county was eventually disbanded in 1844, when Orange County (and those other ones) were formed.
In recognition of the date, the Orange County Government, in collaboration with the Orange County Regional History Center, hosted a bicentennial event recognizing 200 years of Mosquito County, this past Sunday, December 29, in downtown Orlando.
