RENDERING VIA CITY OF WINTER PARK

City of Winter Park staff shared plans late last week to refresh Park Avenue which we first told you about HERE in November 2024, when they gathered public input.

The last Park Avenue restoration took place in the late 90s and the city says its main street, “… is ready for a refresh to provide for today and plan for tomorrow’s needs.” Its goals for the updates include enhancing safety and aesthetics along the corridor, as well as strengthening infrastructure, providing a consistent look for the hardscape and landscape, and maintaining its existing charm.

Work will be carried out in phases, with the first one looking at the section of the street between Fairbanks and Lyman, eventually working its way down to Whipple Avenue.

Recommended updates and additions include:

  • Gateway signage as vehicles enter Park Avenue.
  • Losing some street lights to become Dark Sky Compliant.
  • Irrigation for hanging plants.
  • Entry lighting into Central Park.
  • Removing unhealthy street trees.
  • Fixing problem drainage areas.

Results from last year’s public survey revealed that several residents did not use rideshare (just 30% of respondents), most participants were concerned about the lack of parking and bike racks, some wanted more wayfinding signs, and 70% were satisfied with the current landscaping.

Phase 1 is expected to begin in April 2025, with a completion date sometime this September. The CRA has allotted $1 million for the project, though an official price tag is still being calculated.
