Meredith Sand Designs Studio + Gallery is opening in the Milk District (Website) on March 29th, so I stopped by to see what that means to the rest of us.

I enjoyed talking to Meredith (Instagram) and reviewing her designs. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised that she is enthusiastic about her work. After talking to her and looking around, I was enthusiastic, too.

Her works are minimalist in a perfect way. She showed me her designs, which she hand-stamped onto paper and textiles. She also hand-made the stamps. I loved watching her process. I didn’t anticipate an experience that felt like a fun field trip when I agreed to visit.

After watching her process, I could see that she enjoyed showing off her craft, and how she does it. The designs seem simple, but they are beautiful. She does that thing where it looks nostalgic and contemporary.

The space is around 1000 square feet. There are two rooms. The front room is the retail area. The back room is an art gallery with some retail. The first artist she will show is chef/artist Kristina Gagnier (Instagram), whose art is made from fish bones. The work Meredith showed me looked like it could have been expensive jewelry.

Sand has retail partnerships with national and local brands such as Williams Sonoma, West Elm, MAFFREY’s, and Good Crowd. Her shop/gallery straddles DIY, and polished. Her products are very affordable. Meredith is also excited to be in the Milk District in the new Milk Stacks building on Bumby. The front of the building has a milk spout sculpture.

Her company is eleven years old. A little over a year ago she started experimenting with printing her designs on textiles. She had been printing on paper. She still prints on paper. I was surprised that she had only been printing on textiles for a year. I love the textile prints.

She talked about using the gallery space for small community events. She is open to possibilities. Her work is very functional, and it is art.

I hope to see you at the grand opening. Here are the details.
