3/7/17 ‘Exploring the Everglades Backcountry’ by Roger Hammer

March 7th’s presentation will be with renowned author and native plant enthusiast, Dr. Roger Hammer. Roger is an award-winning professional naturalist, author, botanist, and photographer. Roger has penned numerous works including ‘Central Florida Wildflowers’, ‘Exploring Everglades National Park and the Surrounding Area’,and ‘Everglades Wildflowers: A Field Guide To Wildflowers Of The Historic Everglades, Including Big Cypress, Corkscrew, And Fakahatchee Swamps’. Dr. Hammer will be speaking to our group on this date about ‘Exploring the Everglades Backcountry’ and his experiences canoeing and kayaking through these parts of Florida. Tarflower Chapter is excited to change things up a bit and introduce Central Florida members to a subject that is less talked about- the vast, erstwhile lands of the Everglades south of us and the historical and ecological importance of what was and what needs to be preserved for Florida’s future. He is a retired senior naturalist from the Miami-Dade Parks Department spanning 33 years of service with them. Dr. Hammer also holds a rare title of paddling the 99-mile Everglades Wilderness Waterway three times solo.

Exploring the Everglades Backcountry: Roger Hammer is the author of Everglades Wildflowers, Central Florida Wildflowers, and Exploring Everglades National Park and the Surrounding Area, and has been exploring the Everglades backcountry by canoe, kayak, and on foot for nearly 50 years. He has paddled the 99-mile Everglades Wilderness Waterway solo three times, and in 2010 he paddled his 16’ solo canoe from Flamingo in Everglades National Park up the Gulf coast to Highlands Beach and then back via the interior bays and rivers, logging 129 miles over 10 days. This program highlights the flora and fauna of this great region as well as paddling and safety tips.

Roger L. Hammer is a professional naturalist, author, photographer, kayak fisherman, and avid solo canoeist. He has received numerous prestigious awards from the Florida Native Plant Society, Tropical Audubon Society, and the North American Butterfly Association, and works as a consultant and survival instructor for the Discovery Channel’s reality TV program, Naked and Afraid. Roger grew up in Cocoa Beach and served in the U.S. Army as a tank gunner from 1965 to 1968 before moving to Homestead, Florida. He has been a keynote speaker at Florida Native Plant Society state conferences and was the keynote speaker at the 19th World Orchid Conference in 2008 and at the Florida Wildflower Foundation’s annual symposium in 2016. In 2010 he received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Florida International University.
