February 24, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pmfree
Join Dr. Susan H. Libby for a tour of the current exhibition “The Black Figure in the European Imaginary” which runs through May 14, 2017.
“The Black Figure in the European Imaginary” considers the manner in which the visual arts of Europe imagined black people during the long nineteenth century (c. 1750-1914). Curated by Adrienne L. Childs, Ph.D. and Susan H. Libby, Ph.D., Professor of Art History at Rollins, the exhibition seeks to examine the multifaceted, nuanced, and often vexed relationship between European artists and the black figure.
“The Black Figure in the European Imaginary” is accompanied by a catalogue published by the museum and D. Giles Limited with essays by art historians and curators Adrienne L. Childs and Susan H. Libby with an introduction by renowned scholar David Bindman.
