‘Fort Tryon Park, From The Cloisters to Former Gilded Age Estate’ Webinar
January 4 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
New York Adventure Club | www.AdventureClub.com
A historic Revolutionary War battle; a replica of a medieval monastery; remnants of one of New York’s most incredible private estates. It’s time to take a virtual trip to one of the highest points in Manhattan to uncover the sights and stories hidden throughout one of New York’s most coveted parks.
Join New York Adventure Club for a virtual exploration of Fort Tryon Park in the Manhattan neighborhoods of Hudson Heights & Inwood, which has been the site of Revolutionary War forts, a sprawling Gilded Age estate, and now one of the city’s most beautiful green spaces.
Led by licensed tour guide and neighborhood resident Jim Ryan, our unique digital showcase of Fort Tryon Park’s past and present will include:
- An overview of Fort Tryon Park throughout the past 300 years, from its role in the Revolutionary War, to how it got its nickname “Flower Capital of Manhattan”
- Exclusive photos of the St. Frances Cabrini Shrine — home to the remains of “Mother Cabrini,” the first naturalized citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church
- A look at remnants of the C.K.G. Billings mansion, with stories around the American industrialist tycoon’s infamous dinner party on the estate
- The story of The MET Cloisters, from how John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s acquired the medieval collection of art, to how it was sourced from various French monasteries and abbeys, to the significance of several hundred acres across the Hudson River in New Jersey
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Jim — any and all questions about Fort Tryon Park and the surrounding area are welcomed and encouraged!
