The History of the Charmettes Club of Orlando
Mrs. Juanita Maxey of Winter Garden, Florida, desired to establish a community club for young ladies called the Charmettes. She wanted to help the young girls in that area better themselves and establish a social outlet.
During the 1963-1964 school year, the Delta Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., at Mrs. Maxey’s suggestion adopted the Orlando Club as part of that year’s Career Guidance Program. At that time, the purpose was to give identity, develop charm and provide guidance for the girls’ educational endeavors.
The majority of the girls lived in the Winter Garden area, and at a later date, Amanda Walker and Lois Minor organized another division of the group for girls in Washington Shores and the surrounding area.
The first sponsors were:
Dorothy Nixon
Carolyn Johnson
Lorraine Harris
Clara Ware
Under the sponsorship of Ms. Nora Woodard and later Ms. Lee Bryan, the group has grown in its original purposes and expanded to include community service projects.
Some of the first Charmettes members were Gail Burke, Addie Grier, and Beverly Mount. They are active members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Omicron Omega Chapter.
The past Charmettes’ Advisors: Lorraine Harris, Amanda Johnson Walker, Lee Bryan, Jennifer Adams, Tanya Cooke, Angel Smith, Kitty Woodley, Cece West, and Tiffany Green.
Our Sponsor today is Mrs. Janice Jones.
Since its inception, the club has grown in popularity, bringing young ladies throughout the Central Florida areas to its doors.
