Kevin really connected with the audience when he came in 2014.

AfroPop WorldWide states: “Kevin Spears utilizes the traditional African instrument and tweaks it to create a soulful, funky sound that would make Stevie Wonder smile.”

Hailed as one of the best players alive today, Kevin Spears’ breathtaking ability on an electric version of the traditional African instrument called kalimba is often compared to music legends such as Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, Bobby McFerrin and Les Paul. Spears’ music is a refreshing mix of folk, world, and soul that will move your feet and stir your soul.

In addition to being a gifted musical artist, inventor, instrument builder and mixed media artist, Spears performs internationally including a recent tour of Japan and has worked with and/or opened for artists such as: Victor Wooten, India.Arie, Col. Bruce Hampton, Toubab Krewe, Rising Appalachia, Count Mbutu of the Derek Trucks Band, Karen Briggs (Yanni), Roy “FutureMan” Wooten, Sheldon Reynolds guitarist/Earth, Wind
and Fire and Divinity (bassist for Beyonce) among many others.

As a gifted lecturer and clinician, Kevin’s enthusiastic and thought-provoking performance lectures have been presented by professional and academic organizations around the country including: Ted-X, Percussive Arts Society International
Convention (PASIC), The NAMM Show, TEN THOUSAND Villages, Musikmesse-Frankfurt Germany, SAM ASH Music Stores, Electro-Music Festival, Y2K Looping Festival, Asheville Percussion Festival, Jazz Funk Africa Fest (Yokohama Japan), National Black Arts Festival, Georgia State University, Morehouse University, DrumStrong Festival, Goombay Cultural Festival, Our World Festival, Roots and Heritage Festival and more.

Kevin has been honored with an electric kalimba designed and named after him called the Kevin Spears Pro Kalimba that will be distributed in 30 countries worldwide by Mid-East Music Mfg.
