Join us in welcoming artist Laura Anderson Barbata and the Brooklyn Jumbies to Florida as part of the current exhibition Transcommunality: Laura Anderson Barbata, Collaboration Beyond Borders. Anderson Barbata’s project highlights the vitality of the moko jumbie stilt-walking tradition and demonstrates the possibility of using this storied art form as a platform for social contemporary performance, group participation, and protest. The artist has been working with the Brooklyn Jumbies since 2006, a group that performs numerous cultural elements of the African Diaspora including stilt- walking. The organic performances will take place outside the museum’s grounds and guests will have the opportunity to view or to become active participants in the events.

Laura Anderson Barbata is among Mexico’s most distinguished mid-career artists. Born in Mexico City, she currently lives and works in New York and Mexico City, where she is professor at the Escuela Nacional de Escultura, Pintura y Grabado La Esmeralda of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. Laura Anderson Barbata is a member of the National System of Artists (miembro del Sistema Nacional de Creadores), FONCA-CONCULTA.

The Transcommunality exhibition runs through April 3, 2016.
