Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Lawrence:
A Triad of Society Portraitists in Georgian England
with Dale Montgomery Fellow Rangsook Yoon, Ph.D.
Learn more about the intense rivalries between Joshua Reynolds (1723–92) and Thomas Gainsborough (1727–88), as well as the success of Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830) who succeeded these twin peaks of 18th-century British art. Focusing on their prolific career as portraitists, Dr. Yoon’s talk illuminates their artistic ambition, the price they paid for their own success, and the workings of key institutions that fueled the vibrant culture in London and the outpouring of remarkable portraits during the Georgian period (1714–1830).
