Maitland Symphony Orchestra Presents Passions in Springtime

May 28 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Under direction of Dr. Alvaro Gomez, enjoy these passionate compositions from Beethoven and Schostakovitch.

Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Op. 62, depicts a Roman leader’s transition from brutality to tenderness.  His mother’s pleadings are contrasted in the work by his demand for vengeance.  Beethoven’s Triple Concerto will be played by Routa Kroumovitch, Jamie Clark and Sean Kennard upon return from their Italian tour.  This tour de force uniquely brings the wedding of the three soloists and the symphony to the stage.  It’s all Beethoven!

Schostakovitch’s Symphony Number Five, Fourth Movement will also be performed by this well established community orchestra.  The 5th symphony is A Soviet Artist’s Response to Just Criticism. This was Schostakovitch’s response to Stalin’s demand “I’ll shoot you if I can’t whistle the tune of the next one!”.  The 4th movement pits the collective against the individual who soars in the face of tyranny.
