‘Pre-Code Hollywood: Sex, Sin, and Censorship in the 1930s’ Webinar
April 19 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
New York Adventure Club | www.AdventureClub.com
Prostitution and drug use. Glorified gangsters. Savage monsters and unpunished villains. In the early days of sound film, many Hollywood moviemakers defiantly ignored the strict guidelines created in 1930 that were supposed to keep movies morally “clean.” The result would be many of the most outrageous, controversial, and wildly entertaining movies ever made. This is the story of the most notorious films of 1930s Hollywood, and the explosive reactions they sparked from audiences and protest groups across America.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore films that defied Hollywood’s 1930 “Production Code” guidelines, movie industry rules designed to keep “sin” off the big screen.
Hosted by documentarian and author Steven C. Smith, our virtual experience exploring early Hollywood’s scandalous, censor-defying flicks will include:
- A breakdown of what the 1930 “Production Code” was, and how some movies ignored these censorship rules
- A behind-the-scenes look at some of the most rebellious films of the era, including violent gangster tales like Scarface, sexually daring dramas like Baby Face, and classic monster movies like Frankenstein
- A celebration of the greatest stars of the so-called “Pre-Code” (censor-defying) era, and why they thrived during this time
- Stories of recently re-discovered “Pre-Code” classics, and where you can find them
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Steven — any and all questions about sex and censorship in early Hollywood are welcomed and encouraged!
