What does Fugazi, Patti Smith, Martin Scorsese and an Independent Spirit Award all have in common? Jem Cohen!!!!
A film-maker of independent spirit if there ever was one, Cohen eschewed Hollywood after getting a film degree from Wesleyan and then applied a D.I.Y. Punk Rock technique, quite literally, to his directorial approach, evident in his Fugazi film, Instrument.
In an interview with web-site The Lamp, Cohen said, “…it’s very inspiring to me, to see people kind of take something outside of the industry, outside of the music industry, and it gave me something of a template to work in film outside of the film industry. And there are certainly strains of punk that are activist and that are kind of oppositional in nature to the dominant mainstream culture… that’s very inspiring to me…”
Cohen’s efforts seemingly are by any means, format, and medium necessary- video, Super-8, 16 millimeter, and musical collaboration- “at the crossroads of film, music, and activism…”
Cutting his teeth working as a tech and prop man for directors such as Martin Scorsese, Alex Cox, and John Sayles, and a large CV of musical collaborations besides the aforementioned Fugazi and Patti Smith, such as Elliot Smith, Terry Riley, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, and REM to name a few.
His films are in museum collections and galleries- MOMA, The Whitney Museum, and Robert Miller Gallery. Seen on PBS, and the Sundance Channel. Residencies and workshops at Eyebeam and the International Center for Photography, curated the FUSEBOX music festival. On March 9th 2016, Cohen’s new film Counting will be at Avalon, it’s only screening in the Central Florida area.
