Sustainable Building Performance: The Critical Solutions

November 9, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

This Executive Education course will introduce the impact buildings have on ecology and people through a series of case studies, data points, and informative presentations.

About this Event

Buildings play a pivotal role in the climate crisis. This position is reflected both in terms of building materials and how buildings perform in concert with the environment. Rising temperatures and longer-lasting heat waves increase the demand for cooling and degrade external façades at a higher rate, both resulting in rising costs and maintenance liabilities. In waterfront cities, rising tides or falling water tables call their survival into question. Flooding and water damage to the surrounding infrastructure presents a new set of problems.

Building construction and energy needs together account for 36% of global energy use and 39% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions annually. In response to this, architects, interior designers, and engineers face pressure to create smarter buildings that are better for the environment.

This workshop will examine the nature of these challenges and consider the range of responses available from green building and renewable energy, to energy efficiency and supply chain ethics. This workshop will focus on performance data that is most important to consider when developing post-occupancy analyses, drawing from both academic and professional expertise. This course will feature case study testimony from leading practitioners in the building industry. It will provide participants with a road map of current and future challenges. Attendees will leave with a series of actionable strategies for responding both sustainably and successfully, independent of building scale or context.
