‘The Masterpieces of Greek Love Myths at the MET’ Webinar
August 8, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

New York Adventure Club | www.AdventureClub.com
While most cultures throughout the world have a set of myths passed down from generation to generation, none ever produced such an amazing body of traditional stories as the ancient Greeks. But what myths in particular have interested us the most? And how has art captured these stories and kept their traditions alive in Western cultures? From love to sex and everything in between, it’s time to explore the Greek love myths featured at one of the world’s greatest art museums.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the masterpieces at the Metropolitan Museum of art (MET) that illustrate the deep truths, and oddities, of countless Greek love myths.
Led by Dr. Andrew Lear, a world-renowned expert on gender history and NYC tour guide, our virtual romp through the museum will include:
- A study of masterpieces focusing on mighty Aphrodite and her son, Eros, the god of desire
- Art that showcases the many loves of Zeus, king of the gods, and the animals he transforms himself into to get his way
- A look at the portrayal of Aphrodite and Adonis — and how sleeping with a goddess never turns out well
- Works that tell the messy tale of Theseus, Ariadne, and the Minotaur, ripe with everything from bestial desires and a monstrous birth to human sacrifice and betrayal
- A discussion of same-sex loves of the gods, including Zeus and Ganymede, Zeus (disguised as a woman) and Callisto, and others
- The story of Pygmalion, which we know as My Fair Lady — but in which the Greeks saw a nasty narcissistic, incestuous side
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Andrew — any and all questions about these Greek love myth masterpieces are welcomed and encouraged!
