Works With Sounds – Learn to compose music
October 23, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
This free class is open to all ages and skill levels. Come learn about music by composing your own in a supportive creative environment. No registration is required. Come to as many or as few classes as you like.
This week’s topic is harmony. What is harmony? What are consonance and dissonance, and how do composers use them? We’ll talk about music by Schoenberg, Davidovsky, Nancarrow, and Elliott Carter.
Composer Jeremy Adams leads the class through discussions, examples and composition exercises.
The Timucua Arts Foundation, known for its free, living-room concert series at the unique Timucua white house venue, announces the launch of a new education initiative for teaching music composition to students of all ages and skill levels.
Active professional composers will teach all skill levels and ages through weekly workshops at the Melrose Center of the Orange County Public Library’s downtown branch.
Each class will consist of a presentation on a musical topic, a guided exercise exploring the topic, and time to improvise, compose, and workshop musical ideas. Students will learn contemporary techniques and technology to apply their own personal musical storytelling, culminating with the performance of a 3-5 minute piece.
The cohorts from both the Melrose Center class and the University High School students will present their original music in a concert performed by professional musicians at the Timucua white house in January 2017.
Works With Sounds is made possible by an Arts Learning Mini-Grant from United Arts of Central Florida.
