EDIT: The original version of this story stated that The New Standard had been evicted but according to the owner, they are still negotiating next steps.

The New Standard (Facebook Website) has essentially closed.

The popular restaurant/music venue that taught us how to cook BLT sandwiches last year during quarantine is in the process of being evicted from its home at 1035 N. Orlando Avenue [GMap] in Winter Park. Chef Ryan McLaughlin, featured in the below video, left the restaurant in March 2021.

THIS IS ONLY AGE-RESTRICTED BECAUSE THERE’S SOME FUNNY LANGUAGE AND BOOZE TALK

Public records reveal that a lawsuit was filed against the owners of The New Standard by the landlord, Sydgan Corporation, for two months of missed rent.

According to Faiyaz Kara, food writer for Orlando Weekly, the restaurant closed after brunch service on August 21 following a staff walkout.

We reached out to the owner, Nathan Landwer, for a quote, who shared the following statement.

“The New Standard is a very special place to many people locally in this community as well as to our livestream viewers on Facebook nationally and across the world.

We are at a crossroads where some serious decisions need to be made. There are negotiations underway with multiple parties as to how best to foster the future for all stakeholders involved.  There are legal matters that are being addressed beyond those claimed by the landlord alone. There will be accountability for all in those matters.

The local community, the journalists and media, as well as the hospitality and entertainment industry should consider a few things if you want to follow this story. There are real people and families in pain with this establishment not being open currently. There are innocent employees waiting to get back to work. There are local artists, production teams, and patrons being underserved right now. There are debts to be paid. We are still, all collectively, in the throes of a pandemic.

The New Standard persevered through this unprecedented time that the world is facing with COVID-19 and its ongoing variants. We are not done fighting for what we believe in and we are ready to get back to work.

Furthermore, this statement is being made by The New Standard to address the irresponsible journalism that plagues our world today and that we have found ourselves in the crosshairs of right here in Winter Park, FL.

Bungalower is the only publication that has reached out for a comment from any part of the ownership of The New Standard for the real story. At this time we find it only appropriate to talk with them regarding this matter and only as the information is needed to be shared with the public.”

– NATE LANDWER, THE NEW STANDARD

Landwer says that they are in negotiations with the landlord and new investors and that he is hoping to reopen the venue soon once he has hired new staff.
