The clear winner in this week’s runoff election for District 5 is none other than Shaniqua Rose.

The District 5 election to replace suspended Regina Hill went to a run-off last month when Rose and competitor Travis McCurdy came out with the most votes, with both failing to succeed in winning over 50% of the voters. The runoff election, which took place in June 18, with Rose slipping in with 54.5% of the ballots, or 1,025 votes.

As a pinch-hitter, Rose is expected to serve the rest of Hill’s term through 2025 or could step down if Hill’s charges are dropped or she wins her criminal case.

Rose (LinkedIn) is the current CRA director for the City of Eatonville. She worked for the City of Orlando previously but was fired for a number of reasons including insubordination and falsifying records. Rose then filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission but has since settled the dispute with the City of Orlando.

Just 8.85% of eligible voters turned out during the run-off election. Low voter turnout has long been an issue in Orlando local elections, which generally averages around 2,000 participants.
