On Tuesday, the State Department announced Orlando would be one of six U.S. cities to receive a U.S. Passport Agency.

The move comes as part of a State Department effort to better serve the growing number of Americans seeking U.S. passports and to provide assistance to travelers with urgent travel needs.

While residents can apply for passports at more than 25 locations throughout Orlando, only one facility in the state currently offers expedited and same-day issuances; the Miami Passport Agency, more than 200 miles away.

While there is no exact timeline for when the Orlando office will open, Congressman Maxwell Frost, whose office advocated for the local facility, said the process for selecting a suitable location can take up to a year.

The other agency locations are slated to open in Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Charlotte, San Antonio, and Cincinnati.
