Earlier in the week, Orlando City Council approved a proposition from city staff to install speed cameras at an estimated 23 schools to help combat speeding in school zones across the city.

Once installed, any driver caught speeding 10 mph over the posted limit would receive a $100 fine, backed up with video evidence. If successful, the City of Orlando hopes to expand the program with another 60 cameras.

The first cameras are expected to be installed in 2025, once the city has approved a vendor. Offenders caught speeding in the zones during the first 30 days of the program will receive written warnings, after which, they will be fined.

The schools expected to receive a camera include:

  • Audubon Park K08
  • Blankner School
  • Boone
  • College Park
  • Dover Shores
  • Eagle’s Nest
  • Eccleston
  • Engelwood
  • Innovation
  • Lake Como School
  • Lake Highland Preparatory School
  • Lake Silver
  • Laureate Park
  • Metrowest
  • Millennia Gardens
  • Odyssey
  • Princeton
  • Roberto Clemente
  • Rock Lake
  • Sun Blaze
  • Vista Lakes
  • Vista Pointe
  • Westpointe

A year ago, a law was passed in the State of Florida that allows municipalities to enforce school zone speed limits using special speed detection cameras.
