As a prelude to her workshop “Weaving the Days of Your Life”, Tommye McClure Scanlin will introduce us to the rich world of tapestry weaving. Ms. Scanlin will present on Saturday, February 17, 2018 in the first floor meeting room of the Westminster Towers, located at 1111 South Lakemont Avenue, Winter Park, 32789. The agenda of the meeting is designed for a lively exchange of information: socializing and weaving questions answered at 9:30 AM; the business meeting starts at 10 AM; a members’ show-and-tell starts around 10:30 AM; and the formal program starts around 11:00 AM. In her presentation, Ms. Scanlin will emphasize the many ways you can use tapestry weaving for a daily practice at the loom.
Tommye Scanlin has woven what she calls “tapestry diaries” since 2008 and she will share several of her weavings and talk about the thoughts behind them. She will discuss insights she and others continue to gain from the daily practice.
Ms. Scanlin has been weaving for over thirty years, exploring many different techniques of creating images through the woven structure. In 1988 she began her journey in tapestry weaving and her tapestries have been exhibited nationally and internationally since 1990. She is professor emerita, University of North Georgia, Dahlonega, Georgia. In 2015 Scanlin was presented with the Madeleine K. Anthony Award by the Lumpkin County Historical Society. In 2009, she was granted a Life Membership in Southern Highland Craft Guild and also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Art Education Association for her “…dedication to craft
The Weavers of Orlando is an active, non-profit organization that promotes and encouages interest in the fiber arts, such as weaving, spinning, basketry, dyeing, felting and beading through its monthly programs. Monthly meetings are fun and informative and designed for both the beginning and advanced level weavers. WoO offers regular workshops, study groups, valuable instruction on fiber arts and is a clearinghouse for information on a variety of topics, including yarn and loom sources and other weaving guilds in the United States.
