Jason and Sue Chin, the owners of Good Salt Restaurant Group which is behind Seito Sushi, The Osprey, and Reyes Mezcaleria, have just announced that they will be taking on a new project at The Julian in Parramore’s Creative Village.
The Monroe is named after Dr. William Monroe Wells, a Black physician who opened the Well’s Built Hotel in 1926. The hotel had an adjoined casino and served as a safe space for travelers and performers of color during Segregation and accommodated a number of notable figures like Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Louis Armstrong, and more. The casino is no longer there but the hotel building is now a museum that you can visit at 511 W. South Street [GMap].
The Monroe will occupy a 6,000 SF space in the groundfloor of the 14-story Julian Apartments at 480 N. Terry Avenue [GMap] with two patios – one overlooking the interior courtyard of the building and the other fronting the street and overlooking the soon-to-come Creative Village Central Park.

Jason Chin currently sits on the advisory board of the Valencia College Walt Disney Center for Culinary Arts and Hospitality, and has plans to involve the new property in curriculum at the school, which is part of the downtown campus.
The Monroe is expected to open next year.
