The Florida Department of Transportation will begin installing new detection systems at eight interchanges along the Interstate 4 corridor in Orange, Seminole, and Volusia counties to help reduce the number of wrong-way driving incidents.

The tech is known as “Wrong-Way Vehicle Detection Systems” which consists of specialized signage that detects drivers going the wrong direction on highway off-ramps. The systems are essentially a motion-activated series of electric signs that will flash to warn other motorists and the driver that someone is going the wrong way and to be careful. A camera on-site will take photos of the offending vehicle and send it to local law enforcement to try to stop the vehicle if they don’t turn around.

A LOOK AT WHAT DRIVERS WILL SEE IF A WRONG-WAY DRIVER HAS BEEN DETECTED AT AN APPROACHING RAMP

The locations include:

Orange County

  • Central Florida Parkway
  • Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482)

Seminole County

  • Lake Mary Boulevard
  • County Road (C.R.) 46A
  • S.R. 46
  • Orange Boulevard/U.S. 17-92

Volusia County

  • Dirksen Drive
  • Saxon Boulevard

FDOT will be adding additional wrong-way signs, roadway reflectors, and pavement markings at all of the interstate off-ramps as well, as well as the new fancy aforementioned signs.
