The Orange County Library System has just created a special release beer named after one of its founders in cooperation with Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company.
The Captain Alberson Ale will be available starting on Wednesday, November 10, at 5 p.m. following a special proclamation ceremony by Mayor Dyer. The beer is named after Captain Charles L. Albertson who donated his personal collection of 12,000 books to the City of Orlando in 1921, which launched the library system as we know it as it came with the provision that the city build a new, fireproof building to house it all and that it be called “Albertson Library” with large letters over the front entrance.
The Albertson Library building was replaced in the 1960s when the needs of Orlando residents were believed to have outgrown the original structure, and it was replaced with the Brutalist building that stands in its place. The library’s collection now features over 1.7 million multimedia items in 15 separate branches.
The library’s digital collection includes many articles and photographs featuring Captain Albertson, including his own typewritten autobiography, and a few digitized volumes from his original collection.
Proceeds from the beer will benefit the Friends of the Orange County Library System.
