Charles Stewart [1927-2017] was an American photographer best known for his portraits of jazz singers and musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, and Miles Davis.
His career spanned over 70 years, and he photographed for more than 2000 albums. Many of his works are archived at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
This retrospective will help people from a broad audience discover or rediscover Chuck Stewart’s work and the jazz community, to raise awareness for Stewart’s contribution to artistic culture as an individual and as a part of the African American originated jazz community. Also shown are his photojournalistic works, bringing first-hand documentation of pivotal moments in history, and displaying the breadth of social issues Stewart has engaged with through his career.
