Nature over Nurture: Mary Russell Smith and Mary Josephine Walters, Nineteenth-Century American Women Painters Influenced by the Natural World

Learn more about the role of nineteenth-century American women painters including Mary Josephine Walters and Mary Russell Smith, whose works were recently acquired by the museum. During this lecture Dr. Amy Galpin will contextualize Walters’s paintings within the Hudson River School and examine depictions of the American Civil War as they relate to Smith’s subversive painting, “The Catastrophe”.

The Cornell Fine Arts Museum is located on the Rollins College campus. No reservations or tickets are required for this event. Free parking is available on campus and in the SunTrust Garage on Lyman Avenue with a Museum-validated parking stub.

The museum is closed on Mondays, during major holidays and for installation of new exhibitions.
