Our Map of Hannibal Square

September 27, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

In an era of displacement (or gentrification) the question of how established communities can survive and strive is crucial. Harkening back to classic social activism linked to planning, Forest Gay Michael, Landscape Architecture and Master Planner, has developed a new (or better described as return to classic) vision for this historic African-American community.

He writes,”Save Hannibal! We present to you our 2016 Map of Hannibal Square Community! This is a map by residents of their own historic Community and is prepared without any public dollars. We’ve illustrated the Hannibal Community’s actual boundaries, what places exist today and what places once existed. Our 2016 Map is focused on a heathy and viable future for the historic Hannibal Square Community. We illustrate what is left of the historic predominantly African American Hannibal Square community and show how the remaining non-gentrified area of the Hannibal Community, its historic and cultural places, amazing churches and wealth of affordable housing can be a foundation for the future. This archival-based map illuminates how we preserve, conserve and renew this historic black community for the future.”

Join us on September 27th for this vital discussion.
