About Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz

Born in the Bronx and of Puerto Rican descent, Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz studied illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology and later earned her MFA from Rutgers University. Her most notable works involve performance art, such as “Ask Chuleta,” a web series created by and starring Raimundi-Ortiz as the titular character, deconstructing contemporary art concepts. “Reinas” is another notable work, where Raimundi-Ortiz confronts the traditional archetype of queens and creates her own versions. In her performance series Pietà, Raimundi-Ortiz draws on Michelangelo’s renowned depiction of the Virgin Mary, but replaces the dying Jesus in her arms with members of the public – a mournful response to the ongoing global crises. Today, Raimundi-Ortiz resides in Orlando and teaches at the University of Central Florida. She is part of the Artists-in-Action program at the Art & History Museums of Maitland.
