Orlando is getting a new opera company

Opera del Sol (Facebook | Website) is a new production company that will specialize in opera pop-ups and contemporary operatic performances, staged in “unique and intimate settings” around Central Florida.

The new venture is led by Nicole Dupre, formerly of Florida Opera Theatre and Opera Orlando, and will work in cooperation with the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra (Facebook | Website). Dupre has worked on over 30 productions with operatic and theatrical companies, primarily in hair and makeup.

Opera del Sol will launch its inaugural season this September with an original production set in outer space called Opera Wars, and close with Sweeney Todd.

Other programming includes an art show featuring work by Peterson Guerrier (Website), and a one-woman opera based on a Julia Child broadcast called Bon Appetit, that will include a five-course dinner presented by Publix.
