The Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Garden (Website) will host an exhibition this fall that explores traditional Japanese embroidery and its modern adaptations called Japanese Embroidery: A Journey of Tradition and Innovation.
The exhibition will focus on nihon shishu, a technique that uses metallic and silk thread to create intricate patterns in silk fabrics and is considered to be one of the most challenging forms of embroidery in the world.
The museum will showcase works by Winter Park resident, Karen Plater, who has trained with nihon shishu masters in Japan and America for over 20 years. Works by Plater’s students will also be on display and some pieces will also be available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the artists and the museum.
The exhibition will be on display from August 29-December 3.
