The League of Women Voters of Orange County (Website) will host one of their popular “Hot Topics” luncheons on August 9 at the Winter Park Events Center and the main theme is “Superhero Buildings: Our Secret Weapon to Save the Planet.”

The event will kick off at 11:30 a.m. and will feature WFTV meteorologist George Waldenberger as the moderator. Panelists will include Ashley van Stone, the Sustainability Manager for the City of Orlando; Philip Fairey, the Deputy Director for Florida Solar Energy Center at UCF; Lisa Pearcy, CEO of 15 Lightyears; and Philip Donovan from Little Architects, which just designed the first zero-energy public school in Osceola County.
The discussion will include:
- How do superhero buildings (zero-energy buildings) differ from conventional buildings in the design and construction phase?
- How do zero-energy buildings benefit their owners, occupants and communities?
- Do zero-energy buildings bring challenges and risks? If so, how are they being addressed?
- How do the first cost and total cost of ownership compare for zero-energy buildings and conventional buildings?
Tickets are $37 for non-League members and can be purchased HERE. The doors will open at 11 a.m. with the program starting at 11:30 a.m. and it will be streamed Live to the League’s Facebook page.
