MLK Park in Winter Park will soon be home to a statue of its namesake, celebrated civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The installation is entitled “Ripple” and will stand at the corner of Denning Drive and Morse Boulevard, surrounded by rings of benched seating, mimicking ripples in the water, and was designed by New York-based artist, Andrew Luy (Website). Encircling the installation will be a series of black granite memorial walls with inscriptions of the names of the families that once lived where the park was built.
The project is estimated to cost $450,000 and is expected to break ground in 2024.
The 23-acre park was originally named Lake Island Park but was renamed in 2012. The park is currently poised for a major renovation, which you can learn more about HERE.
