The Florida Department of Transportation has plans to expand SunRail to the Orlando International Airport and International Drive in the near future, and they will be hosting a series of public meetings in the next two weeks to win over residents.

Currently, the closest SunRail stop near the airport is near Sand Lake Road on Orange Avenue. FDOT hopes to create a new east-west SunRail connector between the Sand Lake and Meadow Woods stops that would stop at the airport and International Drive near the Orange County Convention Center. Which should make MegaCon cosplayers with small cars very happy.

A new tax district was recently approved by Orange County commissioners to help pay for the extension, mostly shouldered by Universal Orlando Resort, which is ramping up construction on its Epic Universe park.

Residents can attend the following public meetings to learn more about the project.

  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 5 at the Taft Community Center
  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 6 at Holiday Inn International Drive
  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 7 at the Delta Hotels by Marriott
  • You can also register HERE to watch the Wednesday meeting virtually from your home.

Current plans also include to extend the service to Disney Springs at a later stage.
