A special election has just been called by Orlando Mayor Dyer, following the executive order from Governor DeSantis on April 1 that suspended District 5 city commissioner Regina Hill following allegations that she had taken advantage of an elderly constituent.

Last week, Hill was indicted in the Circuit Court of the Ninth Judicial Circuit in and for Orange County on three counts of Exploitation of an Elderly Person or Disabled Person Greater than $50,000, one count of Scheme to Defraud of $50,000 or More, one count of Fraudulent Use of Personal Identification Over $100,000, and one count of Mortgage Fraud Greater than $100,000.

As such, the Orlando City Charter required Mayor Dyer to call a special election not temporarily fill her seat. The date chosen for the special election is set for Tuesday, May 21, 2024. The winner of that election will serve until the criminal case involving Hill is resolved, or the term ends.
