Craig Russell (Instagram) walked away with the win for Seat 2 on Winter Park’s City Commission this past Tuesday, becoming the city’s first Black commissioner in 130 years.

Russell earned 50.3% of the votes compared to his competition, Jason Johnson, who earned 49.7%, just outside of the half-percent needed that would trigger a recount. The two were in a run-off due to an already close count in the March election.

43-year-old Russell is a teacher and football and wrestling coach at Winter Park High School and is also currently the youngest elected official serving on the commission.

Winter Park also appointed its first woman mayor, Sheila De Ciccio, last month.
